Apple Cider Vinegar With Mother vs Without: What's the Difference?

Apple cider vinegar 'with Mother' is raw, unfiltered vinegar that still contains the Mother, a naturally formed culture of bacteria and cellulose, so it looks cloudy. Vinegar 'without Mother' has been filtered and looks clear. Both are vinegar; research has not shown that one is better for health.

The main differences

  • Appearance: with Mother is cloudy with strands or sediment; without Mother is clear and bright.
  • Processing: with Mother is raw and unfiltered; without Mother is filtered, and often heat-treated too.
  • Taste: similar sourness, though raw vinegar can taste slightly rounder and fruitier.
  • Shake before use: only needed with Mother, because it settles.

What is the Mother?

The Mother forms during the second stage of fermentation, when acetic acid bacteria turn alcohol into acetic acid. It is harmless and a normal part of raw vinegar. We cover it in detail in our guide, What is the Mother in apple cider vinegar?

Does the Mother make it healthier?

You will often read that the Mother is the part that works. The research does not clearly support that. Most studies on apple cider vinegar focus on its acetic acid, not the Mother. The honest position is that evidence is limited and mixed, so we choose raw vinegar because it is the traditional, less processed form, not because we promise results.

Which should you buy?

  • Pick with Mother if you like raw, minimally processed foods and do not mind a cloudy look.
  • Pick without Mother if you prefer a clear liquid for cooking and presentation.

For cooking, either works. For drinking diluted, many people choose raw because of the minimal processing.

How to use raw vinegar

  1. Shake gently so the sediment mixes.
  2. Measure 15 ml (one tablespoon).
  3. Mix into a 250 ml glass of water and drink once a day, then rinse your mouth.

Mevva Raw Apple Cider Vinegar with Mother is made from Kashmir apples, raw and unfiltered, with 5% acidity, in a 250 ml glass bottle.
