What Is the Mother in Apple Cider Vinegar? (And Is the Cloudy Stuff Normal?)

The Mother in apple cider vinegar is a naturally formed culture, made mostly of acetic acid bacteria and cellulose, that develops during fermentation. It is why raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar looks cloudy and can have strands or sediment at the bottom of the bottle.

How does the Mother form?

Apple cider vinegar is made in two natural stages. First, yeast turns the sugar in apple juice into alcohol. Then acetic acid bacteria turn that alcohol into acetic acid, which is the main acid in vinegar. During this second stage, a cloudy, thread-like mass can form. That is the Mother.

What does the Mother look like?

It can look like faint cloudiness, floating strands, sediment at the bottom, or a soft, jelly-like clump. All of these are normal in raw, unfiltered vinegar. A clear, bright vinegar has usually been filtered, and the Mother has been taken out. Both are vinegar. Raw, unfiltered is the traditional form.

Does the Mother have health benefits?

You will often see the Mother described as a probiotic or as the part that does the work. The research does not clearly support that. Most of the studies on apple cider vinegar are about its acetic acid, not the Mother itself.

On the bigger question of what apple cider vinegar does for the body, the honest answer is that the evidence is limited and mixed. A 2025 review of randomised trials found some short-term reductions in body weight and BMI in adults with excess weight, while the evidence overall remains inconclusive. A widely shared 2024 study that reported large weight loss was retracted in 2025, so you should not rely on it.

At Mevva we choose raw, unfiltered vinegar because it is the traditional, minimally processed form. We do not promise weight-loss or medical results.

Is it safe to drink the Mother?

Yes, the Mother is a normal part of raw apple cider vinegar. If you see strands or sediment, shake the bottle gently and carry on. If you ever see fuzzy mould or the vinegar smells truly off, do not use it.

The bigger safety point is not the Mother, it is the acidity. Vinegar is acidic, so always dilute it and never drink it undiluted. Rinse your mouth with plain water afterwards. People with ulcers, low blood pressure or kidney disease, and anyone who is pregnant or on regular medication, should check with a doctor first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Mother in apple cider vinegar?

It is a naturally formed culture of acetic acid bacteria and cellulose that develops during fermentation. It makes raw vinegar look cloudy.

Is cloudy apple cider vinegar normal?

Yes. Cloudiness, strands and sediment are normal in raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with Mother. Shake the bottle gently before use.

Should I strain out the Mother?

No need. It is a normal part of the vinegar. You can strain it if you prefer the look, but it is not required.

Is apple cider vinegar with Mother better than clear apple cider vinegar?

Research has not shown that one is better for health. Raw, unfiltered vinegar with Mother is the traditional, less processed form, which is why many people prefer it.

Can I drink apple cider vinegar every day?

Many people take a small, diluted amount daily. Always dilute it, and check with your doctor if you have a medical condition or take regular medication.
