Sea buckthorn juice: your questions, answered
In India, sea buckthorn is known as Leh Berry or Chharma, and locally as Dhurchuk in Ladakh. It grows wild in the high-altitude Himalayan regions of Leh-Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh, where communities have used it for centuries to fight fatigue, cold, and high-altitude sickness.
Sea buckthorn juice tastes sharp, tangy, and citrusy — naturally sour, a little like a wild cross between orange and passion fruit. That sourness is a sign it's real and undiluted. Mevva adds no sugar to mask it; most people mix their first few servings with water or a little honey.
The usual serving is 30ml (about 2 tablespoons) once a day, ideally diluted in a glass of water. If you're new to it, start with 10–15ml for the first few days and build up, as sea buckthorn is potent and naturally acidic.
Morning is the most popular time, mixed into a glass of water or a smoothie. If you have a sensitive stomach, take it with or after food rather than on an empty stomach, and avoid a late-night serving as it can be mildly energising.
You can, and many people do for better absorption — but because sea buckthorn is naturally acidic, it may cause mild acidity or discomfort on an empty stomach for sensitive people. If that's you, take it with food or well-diluted in water.
Yes. As a food, sea buckthorn juice is considered safe for daily use for most healthy people in normal serving amounts (around 30ml). It has been consumed traditionally for centuries. Start small, stay within the suggested serving, and drink plenty of water alongside it.
Sea buckthorn is a natural food, but some people should check with a doctor first: those on blood-thinning medication (it may mildly slow clotting), people with very low blood pressure, anyone on diabetes or blood-pressure medication, and those with a known berry allergy. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before use, as reliable safety data is limited.
For most people, sea buckthorn juice is well tolerated. Because it's potent and acidic, taking too much or drinking it on an empty stomach can occasionally cause mild digestive upset such as bloating or loose stools. Starting with a small serving and diluting it in water usually prevents this.
For children, offer only a small diluted serving and check with a paediatrician first. For pregnant or breastfeeding women, there isn't enough reliable safety research, so we recommend consulting your doctor before adding it to your routine.
No. Mevva Sea Buckthorn Juice has no added sugar, no artificial colours, and no dilution — just cold-pressed whole berries, including their seeds and pulp, sourced from wild Leh-Ladakh berries.
Store the bottle away from direct sunlight, and refrigerate after opening. Consume within the timeframe printed on the label for the best freshness and potency.
