The safest way to start apple cider vinegar and sea buckthorn juice is slowly: begin with one product at 5 to 10 ml in a full glass of water, once a day, for a week, then add the second at a small amount if you feel fine.

Why start slowly?

Both are tart and acidic. Your stomach and teeth need to be comfortable with them, and a slow start also makes it easy to tell which product, if any, is causing a problem.

A four-week plan

  • Week 1: sea buckthorn juice only, 10 ml in a glass of water.
  • Week 2: raise sea buckthorn juice to 15 ml (about one tablespoon), if comfortable.
  • Week 3: add apple cider vinegar at 5 ml in a full glass of water, at a different time of day.
  • Week 4: raise apple cider vinegar to 15 ml in 250 ml of water, if comfortable.

You can swap the order and start with vinegar. Keep the total simple, and do not go above these amounts.

Make it easier

  • Take them after food if your stomach is sensitive.
  • Use more water if the taste is too strong.
  • Rinse your mouth with plain water after each serving.
  • Keep a measuring spoon with the bottles.

When to pause

Stop and reduce the amount if you get heartburn, nausea, stomach pain or a sore throat. If it keeps happening, stop and speak to your doctor.

Who should check first

Anyone with an ulcer, acid reflux, low blood pressure or kidney disease, who is pregnant, or who takes regular medication should speak to a healthcare professional before starting.
