Apple cider vinegar is safe for most healthy adults in small, diluted amounts, but it can cause throat irritation, heartburn, nausea and enamel wear, and it can interact with some medicines. People with ulcers, reflux, low blood pressure or kidney disease should avoid it unless a doctor says otherwise.

Possible side effects

  • Throat and mouth irritation, especially if undiluted.
  • Heartburn or stomach upset, particularly on an empty stomach.
  • Nausea, if you take too much too quickly.
  • Tooth enamel erosion with frequent or undiluted use.
  • Skin irritation or burns if applied undiluted to skin.

Who should avoid it, or ask a doctor first

  • People with a stomach or duodenal ulcer, or frequent acid reflux
  • People with low blood pressure
  • People with kidney disease
  • People with slow stomach emptying (for example some people with diabetes)
  • Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Anyone taking medicines for diabetes or water tablets (diuretics), or other regular medication

The label on Mevva's apple cider vinegar says it is not recommended during ulcer, low blood pressure or kidney disease unless advised by a healthcare professional.

Medicine interactions

Some medicines can interact with vinegar, including certain diabetes medicines and diuretics. We cannot tell you what is safe for your situation. Ask your doctor or pharmacist.

How to lower the risk

  1. Always dilute: 15 ml in a 250 ml glass of water.
  2. Take it after food if your stomach is sensitive.
  3. Rinse your mouth with water afterwards.
  4. Start small and keep to one serving a day.

When to stop and get help

Stop if you feel burning, severe stomach pain, persistent nausea or vomiting. Seek medical help for severe symptoms.
