Sea Buckthorn for Women's Health: Menopause, Energy & What Studies Show

Sea buckthorn has a long, quiet reputation as a woman's berry — and modern research is catching up to why. From the Omega-7 that supports the body's mucous membranes to the iron and vitamin C that support everyday energy, it lines up unusually well with women's nutritional needs across different life stages. Here's the honest breakdown, including what a menopause trial actually found.
Is sea buckthorn good for women's health?
Yes — for several reasons at once. It's one of the few foods that supports mucosal comfort, iron levels and skin all in a single berry. That combination is why it's long been valued by women, and why it turns up specifically in women's health research.
How does sea buckthorn support women specifically?
Omega-7 for mucous membranes. Sea buckthorn is one of the richest natural sources of Omega-7, which peer-reviewed research has studied in relation to mucous membrane comfort and moisture (NIH-published study, PMC) — one reason it's studied for comfort and dryness, including through menopause.
Iron and vitamin C together. Women often have higher iron needs, and vitamin C helps the body absorb iron from food. Sea buckthorn delivers a big hit of vitamin C alongside its own nutrients — a helpful pairing for everyday energy.
Skin support. The same antioxidants and vitamin C that support collagen make it a favourite for a natural glow — see our sea buckthorn for skin guide.
Dense, gentle nutrition. Across busy and demanding stages of life, its broad nutrient spread supports overall wellbeing.
What does the research show for menopause?
The strongest women's-health evidence we know of is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. It enrolled 116 postmenopausal women with vaginal dryness, itching or burning; 98 completed the 3 months. They took 3 g of sea buckthorn oil or a placebo daily. Compared with placebo, the sea buckthorn group had a significantly better rate of improvement in the integrity of the vaginal lining (odds ratio 3.1, 95% confidence interval 1.11–8.95) (Maturitas, 2014).
Three things to keep in mind. It was a single trial, and the confidence interval is wide, which means the true effect could be modest. It used 3 g of concentrated oil a day, not juice, so a daily juice serving is not the same dose. And the study was commissioned by a sea buckthorn oil company (NutraIngredients report). It's encouraging, and worth a conversation with your doctor, but it isn't a substitute for medical care.
Can sea buckthorn help during menopause?
Sea buckthorn has been studied for supporting mucosal comfort and skin hydration during menopause, largely thanks to its Omega-7. It's a supportive, natural addition — not a treatment, and never a replacement for medical advice. If you're navigating menopause or any hormonal concern, use it alongside your doctor's guidance.
How to use it
Around 15ml a day, diluted in water. Start with 10–15ml for the first week, since it's concentrated and naturally sour, and be consistent — nutritional support builds over time. See our guide on how to drink sea buckthorn juice for more.
The bottom line
For women, sea buckthorn's value is its rare combination — Omega-7, iron-supporting vitamin C, and skin-loving antioxidants, all in one wild berry. As always, choose it cold-pressed and whole-berry so those nutrients actually reach you, and loop in your doctor for anything pregnancy-, menopause- or medication-related.

Frequently asked questions
Is sea buckthorn good for women?
Yes. Its Omega-7 supports mucous membranes, while its vitamin C supports iron absorption and skin — making it well-suited to women's nutrition across different life stages.
Can sea buckthorn help with menopause symptoms?
In a trial of 116 postmenopausal women, 3 g of sea buckthorn oil daily for 3 months improved the integrity of the vaginal lining versus placebo. That was concentrated oil, not juice, and it's nutritional support rather than a treatment. Consult your doctor for menopause care.
Is sea buckthorn safe during pregnancy?
The fruit eaten as food is generally considered likely safe, but there isn't reliable safety data for concentrated juice or supplements during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Please check with your doctor before taking it daily if you're pregnant or nursing.
